Venus, Jupiter and the Moon, February 26 2012

Tonight, just after sunset, Venus, Jupiter and a thin crescent Moon will line up in the evening sky. If you’ve got clear views towards the west it’s really worth a look.

Thanks to the excellent Starwalk app for the above image.

On Sunday evening 26th Feb 2012 at around 20.30 hours my daughter and I were walking home in Skegness, Lincolnshire. It was a bright clear night and my daughter pointed out that there was a black band in the sky running top to bottom about half the width of the moon and almost touching it. There was also what looked like a silver rainbow in the sky and it could have been the edge of the rainbow casting a shadow on the moon. Has anyone got any explanation for this?
It was witnessed by several of my friends but I have never seen anything like it before.
